Character Information
Name: Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi
Canon: Fate/Zero
Canon Point: After being shot by Kiritsugu, but before giving his Command Spells to Sola-Ui (during episode 9).
Age: Kayneth doesn't have an age stated in canon. Headcanonly, he's twenty-nine.
Gender: Male
History: Type-Moon Wiki. If more information is needed, I can certainly provide it!
Personality: Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi is a magus, an aristocrat, and a participant in the fourth Holy Grail War. In summation, he's a pompous, self-centered jerk who thinks a bit too highly of himself.
From a very young age Kayneth has been trained to use magic. He's from a long line of magi and has been told that he's very powerful because of his lineage. He firmly believes that - and that leads to a sense of superiority over everyone who doesn't have a lineage quite as long and rich as his own. He's considered a "prodigy" both in magic and in intelligence. In fact, he came up with a way to summon a Servant for the Fourth Holy Grail War that would enable him to use his magic to its full power by essentially summoning the Servant with two Masters - something that had never been done before. He's very bright and picks up on things quickly. He's one of the youngest professors at Clock Tower; he's a very well-liked and respected professor there. One of his students, Waver Velvet, stole the relic he was going to use to summon his Servant for the Fourth Holy Grail War - but he managed to summon another Servant and participate in the war anyway. Once he's set his mind to something, Kayneth will do anything to achieve it. He isn't accustomed to failure, and he refuses to allow himself to fail.
Kayneth is used to having things handed to him. He was spoiled as a child and expects things to go his way. That doesn't mean that he sits back and waits for things to happen - Kayneth prefers to act rather than react, and he will go out of his way to ensure his plans succeed. He can be very ruthless when it comes to his goals. Anyone who stands in his way is a threat, and he will treat them as such. Kayneth actually does have a good amount of respect for his opponents; though ultimately he is overconfident in his own abilities, and the abilities of those he has to rely on (such as Lancer, his Servant in the Fourth Holy Grail War and Sola-Ui, his fiance and Lancer's other "Master"). This overconfidence is part of the reason why he underestimates Kiritsugu. Kiritsugu also uses modern weaponry in their battle, which Kayneth finds to be ridiculous. Kayneth doesn't believe that modern weaponry can take out a mage - this thought causes him to underestimate Kiritsugu and results in Kayneth getting shot. Kiritsugu is known as the "Magus Killer" for a reason - the bullets he use can sever a magi's Magic Circuits, effectively rendering them incapable of using magic. Kayneth is left incapable of fighting in the Holy Grail War after being shot - this is his canon point for Gora. He'll be fully healed, but quite wary about any sort of battling for some time.
Kayneth is a jerk to everyone participating in the Fourth Holy Grail War - the other Masters, the Servants, and even his own Servant, Lancer. This is due in part to the fact that Kayneth tends to be rather insufferable when one is forced to deal with him for long periods of time, but overall Kayneth can be quite charming. He's well-liked as a professor at Clock Tower and he's capable of being nice to those he wants to suck up to. Everyone else, however? If there's no reason to suck up to them - or if he's trying to kill them to obtain the Holy Grail and with the war - then why should he bother being nice? There's only one exception to this rule and that's Sola-Ui, Kayneth's fiance. She's a very cold woman who was pushed into an arranged marriage with Kayneth due to her lineage. While she doesn't seem to have any sort of interest in him, Kayneth is absolutely in love with her. She berates him about his battle strategy in the first conflict of the Holy Grail War and instead of arguing back - as he'd previously done with both Masters and Servants - Kayneth lets her insult him. Lancer eventually steps in and Sola-Ui backs down. That brings about another issue in his relationship with Sola-Ui: Lancer has a "Love Spot," a mole under his right eye with the power to enchant women. Kayneth is suspicious that Sola-Ui is affected by this, but he doesn't have any concrete proof of this until after he's injured (which is after the point I'm taking him from). It would have been better for him to summon a different Servant who wouldn't accidentally steal his future wife away, but that was an oversight on Kayneth's part. He didn't think he'd have to have a second summoning relic in reserve should his first one be stolen by a rogue student who was pissed that Kayneth tore up his essay and called him out in front of the entire class.
You know, things you totally should prepare for.
His fighting style - the thing Sola-Ui was criticizing him for - could easily be seen as cowardly. Kayneth used his magic to conceal himself from the other Masters and Servants, hiding in the shadows to watch Lancer fight. He amplified his voice at several times to give Lancer orders, and grew frustrated when Lancer refused to kill Saber due to honor. He found that more of a hindrance than anything else, and used one of his Command Spells in order to force Lancer to kill Saber. They were interrupted by Rider and Berserker, causing Kayneth to think better of fighting against all of them and he withdrew along with Lancer. "Honor" isn't something Kayneth feels has a place in battles - the Holy Grail War is typically fought to the death. Kayneth understands the importance of creating every advantage he can (which is why his summoning of Lancer was so revolutionary, it allowed him to utilize his magic to its fullest potential while Sola-Ui used her own magic to keep Lancer manifested). He has no intention of dying anytime soon, so Kayneth is willing to stack the odds in his favor. Remaining hidden obviously will ensure he won't be taken out by a Master or a Servant in the middle of Lancer's fight. Lancer, however, is a man very attached to a code of honor and he wanted a fair fight against Saber. In Kayneth's opinion, there's a place and time for an honorable battle - but not during the Holy Grail War. In a battle between magi, however, that's where his sense of honor kicks in. Kiritsugu utilizes modern technology such as guns to fight - which Kayneth doesn't see as cheating so much as he sees it as a crutch Kiritsugu relies too heavily on. He believes that in a fight between magi, magic should be utilized rather than modern weapons, but he doesn't have any issue fighting against Kiritsugu despite the lack of magic his opponent is using. Granted, Kiritsugu ultimately wins by using a bullet that's been enchanted to take down magi, but that's not the point here.
There has been a lot of pressure placed on Kayneth for quite some time. Being known as a prodigy from a very early age was certainly difficult, but Kayneth rose to the challenge. He utilized his magic to the best of his ability and picked up on things very quickly. His participation in the Fourth Holy Grail War is entirely for the glory and prestige it will bring rather than for the Holy Grail or the promised wish. As far as he's concerned, he already has everything; money, fame within the magic world, a stable job he genuinely likes, a beautiful fiancee... What more could he want other than more fame? He's not accustomed to dealing with life's hardships and will certainly have a hard time dealing with the changes in lifestyle Gora will provide. But he'll adapt; that's what a good prodigy would do, right? They'd find a way to overcome the obstacles and exceed all the expectations placed on him.
Watch out, Gora. Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi will show you just how things are done.
Abilities Information
Fighter or Sacrifice?: Sacrifice. In his world, Kayneth is a Master who controls a Servant - the Servant does the fighting while the Master gives orders. This is similar to the Fighter/Sacrifice pair, though the Master is capable of fighting as well using magic. Kayneth is used to giving orders and would be better suited to be a Sacrifice in this world.
Canon abilities: Kayneth is a very powerful mage; in the world of Fate/Zero, the strongest magi are born from generations of cultivation and study. Kayneth is the ninth generation of magi in his line - while the majority of the students he teaches are sixth generation or earlier. He's very powerful and created twenty-four floors of traps and magical defenses in the Hyatt Hotel where he was staying. Unfortunately he underestimated his opponents and lost all of this in an explosion. He lost several Mystic Codes as well - though the one he saved is very powerful. The Volumen Hydragyrum is around ten liters of mercury Kayneth manipulates through magic. The Volumen Hydragyrum is capable of attacking, defending, and searching for lifeforms without Kayneth's command. It doesn't have eyes and instead searches through heartbeats and heart-rate; it can be tricked by slowing one's heart down to the bare minimum (as Kiritsugu does to avoid it). Its attack mode is very powerful but can be defeated in close combat. It can take the form of a whip, knife, or spear and Kayneth uses it to attack from afar. He doesn't give it any verbal commands; it responds to his thoughts. As far as defense goes, the Volumen Hydragyrum reacts automatically to defend Kayneth; even when he doesn't know he's in danger. It can be tricked if it doesn't exert enough force to protect Kayneth - which results in him getting shot twice by Kiritsugu. If it's possible, I'd like Kayneth to keep the Volumen Hydragyrum - at least for defensive purposes outside of battles.
Kayneth's own abilities are never fully revealed in canon, though he can hide himself through an invisibility spell (he's only discovered because of infrared vision). He also can heal minor wounds and repair clothing easily. But Kayneth's most powerful spell results in the summoning of a Servant to fight in the fourth Holy Grail War. He summoned a Lancer-class Servant, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne. The Command Seals on the back of his right hand allow him to control Lancer; at his current canon point he'll still have those (but probably won't be capable of using them). Because of the way he summoned Lancer, he doesn't have to use his own power to keep Lancer manifested and fighting. His fiance, Sola-Ui, is the one in charge of that, which leaves Kayneth free to cast as many spells as he'd like using his own power. This is something no one had attempted before Kayneth and he only succeeded due to his own power and genius.
Name: Peerless? If that doesn't work, feel free to come up with something else! Man, this is hard...

First Person: [Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi is not pleased. He's recently been informed that for a man his age, having these cat ears is a stigma.]
I wasn't aware these weren't commonplace around here.
[He's obviously trying to control his anger. It's not working all that well. Clearly Kayneth has finally decided to explore and... well, things didn't end quite as well as he had expected them to.]
I was mocked for having these ears. Would someone care to explain why?
[Kayneth motions to the cat ears - they're flattened back against his head and practically blending into his hair, but he doesn't seem to notice.]
Is there something I'm missing? I was under the impression that everyone had these ears when they arrived here. Am I supposed to get rid of them somehow? Does this have something to do with the combination of Fighters and Sacrifices?
[The questions are mostly rhetorical and Kayneth finally shakes his head. The ears relax a little and he seems to have calmed down a bit.]
I would like some answers. Please let me know if you have any information.
[And with that, Kayneth ends the feed.]
Third Person: Kayneth thought living here would be much easier than it's turning out to be. The idea of "Fighters" and "Sacrifices" makes enough sense as anything else in this world (including these cat ears). He was a Master back home with a Servant - there are enough similarities between the two to enable a rather easy transition. He's bonded quite well with his Fighter and the two of them have been given a private cabin to train their connection.
That's all well and good, he could have put up with just that. The biggest issue Kayneth is having is the fact that there's no one to cook. He was raised in a well-to-do family that had a private chef; Kayneth had never felt the need to learn how to cook. But here he was now with a Fighter who couldn't cook either. After arguing for a bit and flipping a coin, he's been sent out to the grocery store. Kayneth would have bought the more expensive ingredients, but money here isn't quite as easy to obtain as it was back home. He never had to worry about finances before.
So here he is on the street corner, trying to figure out where he is on a map while juggling two bags of groceries. A sudden gust of wind catches the map and blows it out of reach, earning a frustrated sigh from Kayneth. Nothing is going his way today. The lines at the grocery store were long and the amount of money it cost was much more than it should have been. He's tired, irritated, and ready to go home and rest for a little while.
The second bag he's holding suddenly slips against his grip and Kayneth jumps back instinctively when it crashes on the ground. It's a good thing he did - the glass jar of spaghetti sauce would have crashed on his foot. There's really no hope for whatever was in that bag now; the spaghetti sauce is leaking out everywhere. Kayneth takes a deep breath, eyes closed and hands clenched together around the remaining bag of groceries. There's no need to get pissed off and make a scene.
Instead, he focuses his mind and tries to reach out to his Fighter. The distance is still a bit too great, but his agitation is surprisingly not working against him today. He can actually feel his Fighter and when he opens his eyes, Kayneth has an idea of which direction he should be heading. He gives the fallen back of groceries one final glare before departing, leaving it. Someone else will take care of it, after all.
Anything Else?: Fate/Zero's anime adaptation is incomplete, but the series is based on the light novels which are complete and can be found here.
